Ogamba Makes Fresh Changes to Councils of Six Universities
The changes, contained in a Gazette Notice dated October 2, include a notable switch involving Machakos University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Changes at Machakos University and JKUAT
Lazarus Kipichii Tanui has been appointed to the Machakos University Council for a three-year term with immediate effect.
His appointment has resulted in the revocation of Mercy Kanyara's previous appointment to the Machakos University Council.
Kanyara had been appointed to the council on January 26, 2024, by former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu for a three-year term.
Despite losing her position at Machakos University, Kanyara has been given a new role at JKUAT.
Ogamba appointed her to the JKUAT Council for another three-year term, with the appointment taking effect on October 2.
The changes were made under Section 36(1)(d) of the Universities Act, according to the Gazette Notice.
Other University Councils Affected
At Turkana University College, Evelyne Kyendo has been appointed to the governing council for a three-year term.
Her appointment takes effect immediately, adding a new member to the institution's governing structure.
Wilson Kipruto Ronno has also been appointed to the Kenyatta University Council for a three-year period.
Meanwhile, John Kamanga Ole Ntetiyan has had his tenure on the Koitaleel Samoei University College Council renewed for another three years.
AbdiHakim Guhad Gabow has also been appointed to the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology Council for a three-year term.
Councils Continue to Oversee Universities
University councils are responsible for providing institutional oversight and guiding key aspects of university administration and governance.
The latest appointments therefore bring changes to the leadership structures overseeing several public universities and constituent institutions.
The appointments come as the Education Ministry continues to make changes within governing bodies across the education sector.
Other ministries also announced board appointments and renewals in the same Gazette Notice, covering institutions in areas including trade, drought management, water regulation and film.
