Gachagua Raises Questions Over Nathan Wasama Killing

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of Mount Elgon parliamentary hopeful Nathan Wasama, saying authorities must explain whether police ignored earlier warnings about threats to his life.

Speaking during a political meeting in Narok East Constituency on Monday, August 10, Gachagua claimed that Wasama had repeatedly reported security concerns before gunmen shot him dead in Bungoma County.

Former DP Questions Police Response

Gachagua said the reports attributed to Wasama raise serious questions about how police handled the alleged threats.

He asked investigators to establish whether officers received the complaints and, if so, what action they took to protect him.

The DCP leader also urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to provide regular updates on the progress of the inquiry and identify those responsible for the shooting.

Wasama Killed at Business Premises

Unknown attackers shot Wasama, 62, at his business premises in Tuikuk Market, Cheptais, on the night of Thursday, August 6.

Family members said he had expressed interest in contesting the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

His widow, Janet Chepkemoi, has appealed for investigators to examine all possible motives behind the killing and ensure that those responsible face justice.

Detectives Continue Investigations

Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that detectives had opened investigations into the shooting.

Police had not announced any arrests by Monday, and investigators had not linked the killing to political activities.

Detectives are continuing to collect statements, review evidence and pursue leads that could help identify the attackers and determine what motivated the crime.

Political Debate Intensifies

Gachagua’s remarks have added a political dimension to the case as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former Deputy President has recently intensified his criticism of the government while expanding support for the Democracy for the Citizens Party across different regions of the country.

His latest comments are likely to increase pressure on investigators to provide answers as the Wasama family and local residents continue to demand a transparent investigation into the killing.
