Oburu Oginga Steps Down From Senate Energy Committee Leadership

Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has resigned as chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee, bringing an end to his tenure at the helm of one of the Senate’s key oversight committees.

The ODM leader announced the decision during a committee meeting on Tuesday, August 11, saying factors outside his control influenced the move.

Senator Denies Removal Claims

Oburu insisted that he made the decision voluntarily and asked colleagues not to interpret the resignation as a forced exit from the position.

He told members that the committee should treat the transition as a normal and peaceful handover of leadership.

The senator did not disclose the specific circumstances that prompted his decision to step down.

New Committee Leadership Elected

Committee members elected Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang as the new chairperson immediately after Oburu’s resignation.

Kisang previously served as vice-chairperson of the Energy Committee and now takes over the leadership role.

ODM nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla also secured election as the committee’s new vice-chairperson.

Oburu will continue serving as an ordinary member of the committee despite relinquishing the chairmanship.

Change Comes Months After Senate Reshuffle

The leadership change follows the Senate standing committee reshuffle announced in June 2026.

That reshuffle removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from the Energy Committee and brought in Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ as his replacement.

The earlier changes generated significant debate within ODM because they affected several prominent party figures.

Coalition Deal Adds Political Interest

Oburu’s resignation comes shortly after President William Ruto confirmed that Kenya Kwanza and ODM had agreed to work together ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The President said the two political formations would prepare a joint manifesto and coordinate their political agenda under the broad-based government arrangement.

The timing of Oburu’s departure has therefore attracted political attention, with analysts suggesting the veteran senator may want to focus more on ODM’s internal organisation and preparations for the next election.

The resignation marks another notable development in the evolving relationship between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration as political realignments continue to shape the road to the 2027 General Election.
