Sonko Helps Repatriate Utumishi Girls' Student Body for Burial
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has helped the family of a student who died in the Utumishi Girls Academy fire with burial arrangements.
The student, Zuhura Rama, was among the 16 learners who lost their lives in the tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy.
Sonko said on Sunday, June 7, that he supported the family in the process of retrieving and preparing the body for burial. He confirmed that the remains were released to the family and transported for burial at the Coast.
According to Sonko, the body was first handed over to the family at Naivasha Mortuary before being moved for further arrangements in line with Islamic burial customs.
He noted that the process was completed smoothly and in coordination with the family and relevant authorities.
The deceased’s father, Rama Higa, received the body together with other relatives as they prepared for the final journey home.
The fire at Utumishi Girls Academy claimed 16 students and left several others injured, sparking national concern over safety in boarding schools.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire as families continue to receive support during the difficult period.
Sonko said he stepped in to assist as part of efforts to support grieving families affected by the tragedy.
The incident has also renewed calls for stronger safety measures in schools to prevent similar disasters in the future.
