Government to Pay Ksh200,000 to Families of Utumishi Girls Fire Victims
The government has announced financial support for families affected by the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, confirming that each bereaved household will receive Ksh200,000.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said on Sunday, June 7, that the support will be extended to all families who lost loved ones in the tragedy, including a parent who died while travelling to pick up her child from the school.
Mwaura stated that the government is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure all affected families receive assistance without delay. He added that the state remains committed to supporting both the injured students and the families who lost loved ones.
He further explained that injured learners have already been moved from St Joseph Hospital in Gilgil to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment. The government said it will cater for all medical expenses incurred in both facilities.
In addition to the cash support, authorities will also cover funeral-related costs. These include mortuary fees, coffin expenses, and transportation of bodies to their respective homes for burial.
Officials also confirmed that a requiem mass for the deceased students will be organised at Utumishi Girls Academy, with the date to be announced later.
A multi-agency team led by the National Disaster Operations Centre continues to coordinate relief efforts and oversee implementation of government interventions.
The fire, which broke out on May 28 at around 12:45 a.m., claimed the lives of 16 students and left 79 others injured. Investigations into the cause of the incident are still ongoing.
Separately, a court has ordered nine students linked to the fire to remain in custody as detectives continue with their investigations. The suspects are being held while authorities gather more evidence and statements from witnesses.
The government says it will continue supporting affected families as the investigation and recovery process continues.
