Wicknell Chivayo Met Ruto to Discuss $200 Million Kenya Investment Before Death
The talks covered business, investment, infrastructure development and Africa's economic prospects, according to Chivayo. He said the meeting moved his long-standing plan to invest US$200 million in Kenyan infrastructure toward implementation.
Investment Plan Lacks Formal Documentation
Chivayo described the investment as private capital meant to create jobs and strengthen Kenya's infrastructure. However, he did not name the specific projects, companies or local partners involved in the proposed investment.
State House did not respond to Chivayo's US$200 million investment claim or confirm the meeting's details. No report confirms that a memorandum of understanding was signed between parties.
Repeated Access to Presidential Residences
Chivayo had met Ruto repeatedly since 2025 at State House, Sagana State Lodge and Ruto's Kilgoris residence. He documented many of the encounters on social media, sharing details of their discussions publicly.
In August 2026, Chivayo filmed Ruto driving him to a helipad after a family function. The viral clip prompted Kenyan commentators to describe their relationship as a "bromance" indicating close association.
Businessman Faces Scrutiny Over Access
His access to the President drew attention because meetings were both official and private simultaneously. Chivayo was simultaneously promoting Kenyan investments while enjoying repeated presidential access and engagement.
Chivayo had faced scrutiny in Zimbabwe over public procurement and election financing allegations he denied. His name was linked to discussions on Jomo Kenyatta International Airport expansion, though the government disputed contract involvement.
Helicopter Crash Ends Life and Investment Prospects
Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke died in a private helicopter crash on September 30, 2026. The aircraft crashed in Marondera, about 70 kilometres east of Harare, at approximately 5 p.m.
Six people were reportedly aboard the helicopter and none survived the crash, according to police. The Zimbabwean government announced investigations would follow into the circumstances of the accident.
Investment Commitment Remains Unresolved
Whether Chivayo's Ksh25.9 billion investment would have become real projects is now unanswerable. Nothing publicly available shows the investment commitment was formally documented or contracted.
President Ruto mourned Chivayo as a "dear friend" on October 1 and sent condolences to families. The President extended sympathy to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwean people.
