Uhuru Sends Fresh Message to Mt Kenya Over 2022 ‘Mistake’

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has revisited the 2022 political contest, warning his Mt Kenya audience against repeating what he described as a past mistake.

Uhuru delivered the message on Saturday, October 3, during the funeral of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.

Without directly naming President William Ruto, the retired President reminded the gathering of the advice he said he had given voters before the 2022 General Election.

He said he had supported Raila Odinga and Martha Karua at the time because he believed their partnership would have taken the country further.

Uhuru says repeating the mistake would be worse

The former President used a popular saying to underline his message, telling the crowd that making a mistake was not the main problem.

According to Uhuru, the greater problem would be repeating the same mistake after its consequences had already been experienced.

The remarks were delivered as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Uhuru did not directly state what political choice he wanted the audience to make, instead leaving his message in deliberately indirect terms.

The crowd responded to his remarks as he asked whether the same mistake would be repeated.

Former President responds to ‘sponsor’ attacks

Uhuru also addressed the political labels that have recently been directed at him by President Ruto and his allies.

The retired President said he was not seeking another political position and maintained that he was satisfied with the opportunity he had already received to serve the country.

He said he was not concerned about being described as a “sponsor”, “drunkard” or other names by his political critics.

Uhuru argued that those attacking him were wasting their time because, according to him, he was not pursuing anything for himself.

Jubilee leadership handed to Matiang’i

The remarks came shortly after Uhuru handed over leadership of the Jubilee Party to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Uhuru has remained within the party as a senior adviser as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.

His political activities and interactions with opposition figures have continued to attract attention from the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Ruto and some of his allies have accused the former President of supporting opposition politicians and movements seeking to challenge the government.

Those accusations have included claims that Uhuru is financially backing opposition political activities, allegations that the retired President has publicly dismissed.

Political leaders attend Karua funeral

The funeral brought together several prominent political figures from different parties.

Among those present were Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi.

The gathering also featured political messages about the 2027 contest, including calls for opposition leaders seeking the presidency to work towards a common candidate.
