TEP Set to Become Linda Mwananchi Movement Under Sifuna
TEP’s National Executive Council has approved the proposed rebranding, bringing Sifuna’s political vehicle closer to the identity that has been used during his nationwide mobilisation.
The development comes only days after TEP was unveiled as Sifuna’s political vehicle for the 2027 presidential race.
However, Sifuna had already indicated that the party’s current name was not intended to become the permanent identity of his political project.
Why Sifuna Chose TEP
TEP became the available vehicle after efforts to establish a separate party for the Linda Mwananchi movement encountered registration difficulties.
Rather than wait for an entirely new party structure, Sifuna’s camp turned to an existing political party and began exploring how it could be transformed into the movement’s preferred brand.
The arrangement allowed the political group to have a party structure while the battle over the Linda Mwananchi name continued.
Sifuna subsequently presented TEP as a platform that could be renamed once the necessary administrative and legal requirements were met.
The proposed change therefore goes beyond a simple alteration of a party name.
It is intended to bring the formal political vehicle in line with the wider Linda Mwananchi movement that Sifuna and his allies have been building ahead of 2027.
Legal Battle Cleared One Major Hurdle
The rebranding became more realistic after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal overturned the Registrar of Political Parties’ earlier decision blocking reservation of the Linda Mwananchi name.
The Registrar subsequently approved reservation of Linda Mwananchi Movement for up to 90 days, allowing Sifuna’s camp to proceed with the next stage of its plans.
The reservation, however, does not amount to full registration of a new political party.
The process still has to pass through the relevant legal and administrative requirements before the proposed identity can become the formal party structure.
Another Applicant Challenges the Name
The name issue has also not disappeared completely despite the recent victory before the tribunal.
Charles Wanyonyi has asked the Registrar to prioritise his earlier application for the name Linda Mwananchi, Party of Kenya, saying it was submitted before the application linked to Sifuna’s movement.
That competing claim leaves an additional administrative issue hanging over Sifuna’s planned transition.
It also means that securing the reservation of Linda Mwananchi Movement is only one part of the wider process.
October 15 Deadline Adds Pressure
Time is another challenge facing the political outfit as the 2027 election preparations accelerate.
Political parties intending to participate in the election are required to submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials to the electoral authorities by October 15.
The approaching deadline places pressure on Sifuna’s team to ensure that its party structure and authorised officials are properly aligned with the electoral requirements.
Any delay in the transition could leave the group relying on TEP while the preferred Linda Mwananchi identity remains under development.
TEP Remains the Backup
Sifuna has already acknowledged that the current party name could remain in place if further obstacles prevent the proposed rebranding.
That position gives the political movement an alternative route should the administrative or legal process fail to be completed in time.
For now, the plan remains to transform TEP into Linda Mwananchi Movement rather than create an entirely new political vehicle from scratch.
The coming days will determine whether Sifuna’s preferred identity can be secured and aligned with the requirements for the 2027 election.
The proposed rebrand also represents an attempt to turn Linda Mwananchi from a political mobilisation platform into a formal electoral vehicle.
If successful, the name change will give Sifuna’s presidential campaign a single identity under which the movement can organise for the 2027 contest.
