The emergency response was strengthened by members of the surrounding Kapkatet community, who rushed to the school after thick smoke and flames were spotted. Students, teachers and residents worked together to control the fire while also removing personal belongings from the affected building.
Students Evacuated as Fire Spread
The fire was reported on the upper floor of the multi-storey dormitory before flames spread across the affected section. The intensity of the blaze produced thick smoke that could be seen rising above the school as emergency efforts continued.
A headcount was conducted after the evacuation, with all learners reportedly accounted for. No injuries or deaths had been reported by Sunday evening, according to reports from the scene.
Residents also played an important role in the emergency response after arriving at the institution. Some helped students salvage mattresses, trunks, bedding, books and other belongings from the affected dormitory.
Dormitory Sustains Extensive Damage
Although the flames were stopped from reaching neighbouring buildings, the affected section of the dormitory suffered significant damage. Windows and other parts of the structure were destroyed as the fire moved across the floor.
The full extent of the damage was yet to be established as authorities began assessing the affected building. The cause of the fire also remained unknown, with investigations expected to establish what triggered the incident.
Fire Raises Fresh Safety Concerns
The incident has renewed attention on fire safety in Kenyan boarding schools, particularly following several school fires reported in recent months. Boarding facilities remain especially vulnerable because large numbers of learners sleep in the same buildings.
The Tengecha Boys incident also comes after a fire at Kirwara Boys High School in Murang’a County on August 26. That blaze destroyed a school bus that had been parked near the affected area, adding to concerns over preparedness and emergency response in schools.
For Tengecha Boys, the immediate danger was brought under control without reported casualties. Attention is now expected to shift towards determining the cause of the fire and assessing the damage caused to the dormitory.
