MCA Arrested Over Alleged Phone Theft in Nairobi

A sitting Member of the County Assembly (MCA) has been arrested in Nairobi over alleged mobile phone thefts in the Central Business District.

Detectives from Kamukunji Police Station apprehended the politician following investigations into three separate phone theft incidents reported in August and September 2026.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said investigators reviewed CCTV footage to identify the suspect in connection with the reported incidents.

The arrest also revealed an outstanding warrant linked to a separate alleged theft case involving the same suspect.

Outstanding Court Warrant Discovered

According to the DCI, the MCA had previously been released on bond in the separate case but allegedly failed to attend court as required.

The outstanding warrant emerged as detectives pursued the investigations into the reported phone theft incidents in Nairobi's busy commercial district.

Authorities have not publicly provided further details about the separate case or the circumstances surrounding the alleged failure to appear in court.

The suspect remains in custody as detectives complete the necessary procedures ahead of his arraignment.

An arraignment will allow the suspect to appear before a court, where the allegations can be formally presented and addressed through the legal process.

DCI Reaffirms Commitment to Law Enforcement

The DCI said the arrest demonstrated its commitment to investigating reported crimes and pursuing suspects regardless of their positions in society.

“The DCI reiterates that no one is above the law. Detectives will continue to pursue leads and bring suspects before the courts to answer to criminal conduct, regardless of their position or status in society,” the agency said.

The investigations followed three reported incidents involving alleged mobile phone thefts within Nairobi's Central Business District during August and September.

CCTV footage reportedly helped detectives connect the suspect to the incidents, although authorities have not released further details about the recordings.

The DCI has not disclosed the MCA's name, ward, or county in the information provided about the arrest.

It also remains unclear when the suspect will appear in court or whether additional charges could arise from the ongoing investigations.

The allegations have not been determined by a court, and the suspect remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The case is expected to proceed through the judicial process once detectives complete the preparations for the suspect's arraignment.
