MP Kitur Dismisses Sifuna-Gachagua Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur
Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur has criticised the emerging political engagement between Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kitur dismissed the meeting as inconsequential, arguing that the two leaders needed a clearer political agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a local radio interview on October 23, 2026, the legislator questioned what the emerging partnership would offer Kenyan voters.

He claimed both politicians had experienced setbacks within their respective political establishments, casting doubt on their ability to present a credible alternative.

“The handshake you’re talking about between Sifuna and Gachagua, the two most important, is actually very hopeless because these are rejected leaders who were also ejected from their positions,” Kitur said.

Kitur Questions Opposition's 2027 Agenda

The MP also challenged opposition leaders to move beyond calls for President William Ruto to serve only one term.

He argued that Kenyans needed specific proposals explaining what an alternative administration would do differently.

“The only conversation we hear is one term. So what about one term? Kenyans want a vision; Kenyans want something to hold on to. What is it that you’re bringing on the table?” he asked.

Kitur maintained that political leaders seeking power should present clear policies that voters could assess before deciding whom to support.

He said opposition leaders needed to explain how their proposed leadership would address the country's challenges and deliver meaningful changes.

The legislator contrasted the opposition's emerging political engagements with what he described as Ruto's efforts to unite communities across the country.

He cited the President's political engagements in different regions as evidence of a leadership approach focused on bringing Kenyans together.

Sifuna and Gachagua Meet in Nyeri

Kitur's remarks followed a meeting between Sifuna, Gachagua and members of the Linda Mwananchi team at Gachagua's Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, attracting attention amid continuing efforts by opposition figures to explore political cooperation.

Sifuna, the Nairobi senator, and Gachagua, who previously served as deputy president, have both been involved in political activities opposing Ruto's administration.

However, the meeting did not, by itself, establish an agreement on a joint presidential candidate or a common political programme.

Kitur said he wanted the emerging alliance to outline proposals that could persuade Kenyans to place their confidence in its leadership.

“In my view, we’re looking forward to hearing something substantial, something substantive that can change the mindset of Kenyans,” he said.

He added that voters needed to identify leaders with a clear vision for taking the country towards a brighter future.

Opposition Realignments Ahead of 2027

The exchange comes as political leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Potential cooperation between opposition figures has generated discussion about whether different political groups could develop a shared platform against Ruto.

However, questions remain about the policies, leadership arrangements and presidential candidate any eventual coalition might adopt.

The discussions are unfolding as politicians seek to build support among voters ahead of the next general election.

For now, Kitur's comments reflect his criticism of the meeting, while the participating leaders have yet to establish a joint presidential ticket through that engagement alone.
