Matiang'i-Nyoro Alliance Rattles Gachagua Camp as Opposition Tensions Grow
Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have questioned the relationship. Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango accused Matiang'i of failing to stop his supporters from attacking Gachagua. He also warned the opposition against alliances that could cause instability. Deputy party leader Cleophas Malala and Methu have joined the criticism.
Matiang'i and Nyoro reject the claims. Matiang'i says opposition parties must focus on bringing change, not trading public insults. Nyoro called the criticism "juvenile."
The two leaders grew closer after Nyoro quit UDA on August 17 and joined the People's Party of Kenya. Matiang'i welcomed the move and promised to work with the party. Nyoro says he consulted Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua before the switch.
One analyst sees a possible third force. The partnership could give Mt Kenya voters another political option and complicate Gachagua's push to lead the region.
Gachagua has warned that one opposition principal may walk away once the coalition picks a single presidential candidate. Matiang'i has pledged to stay in the opposition even if he misses the ticket.
