Lorry Rams Cars and Pedestrians in Deadly Meru Crash
Meru County Commissioner George Omollo confirmed the accident, saying the total number of casualties had not yet been established. Initial reports suggested that the lorry suffered brake failure before veering off the road and hitting people and vehicles in the busy area.
Injured Victims Rushed to Hospital
The impact reportedly caused extensive damage to private vehicles, with broken glass and wreckage scattered across the road. Nearby businesses were also said to have been affected as the lorry moved through the area.
Some injured victims were taken to Meru Level 5 Hospital for treatment. Authorities had not confirmed the number of people admitted or the severity of their injuries by the time of reporting.
Governor Calls for Calm
Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma expressed sympathy with families affected by the crash and wished the injured a quick recovery. He said county emergency response teams had been deployed to help rescue victims and provide immediate assistance.
Mutuma urged residents to remain calm and allow emergency personnel to carry out their duties without interference. Officials continued working to establish the full extent of the tragedy.
Another Serious Crash Raises Safety Concerns
The Meru accident follows another fatal crash in Migori County on Wednesday, October 7, when a lorry carrying hawkers reportedly plunged into River Kuja along the Masara-Sori road. Two people were reported dead, while several others sustained injuries and were taken to St Joseph Mission Hospital.
The incidents come amid wider concerns over deadly road crashes involving heavy vehicles across Kenya. Investigations and further official updates are expected to clarify the circumstances of the Meru collision and confirm the final casualty figures.
