Kaluma Tells Sifuna to Give Up Senate Seat After TEP Move

Peter Kaluma has challenged Edwin Sifuna to give up his Nairobi Senate seat and seek a fresh mandate under The Equitable Party (TEP).

The Homa Bay Town MP made the challenge after Sifuna was unveiled as TEP’s political leader and presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kaluma Questions Sifuna’s Senate Position

Kaluma argued that Sifuna should not continue serving as an ODM-elected senator after moving his political ambitions to a different party.

He said Sifuna should resign and face voters again if he believes in the constitutional principles and rule of law that he has been championing.

Kaluma’s position was presented as a legal argument, rather than an established ruling that Sifuna must immediately leave office.

The lawmaker challenged the Nairobi senator to demonstrate his position by seeking a new mandate on the TEP ticket.

Sifuna Starts New Political Chapter

The demand comes as Sifuna begins a new political phase after his prolonged dispute with ODM leadership.

His removal as ODM Secretary-General was upheld by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal in September, after the tribunal found that he had been given an opportunity to defend himself during the disciplinary process.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties had earlier recognised his removal from the party leadership and updated ODM’s records.

Sifuna has since adopted TEP as his political vehicle as he seeks to build a campaign for the presidency in 2027.

TEP Takes Centre Stage

The party was formally unveiled in Nairobi on Sunday, with several leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement attending the event.

Sifuna is expected to lead the party as it prepares for a broader political arrangement under the Linda Mwananchi banner.

The development has also attracted support from several opposition figures, although some leaders were notably absent from the TEP unveiling.

Kaluma has now added a new challenge to the debate surrounding Sifuna’s political transition, calling on him to put his new political allegiance to a fresh vote.
