Jony the Hairdresser Explains Why He Uses Ladies’ Bathrooms

Kenyan hair and makeup artist John Mokuna Mungai, popularly known as Jony the Hairdresser, has explained why he uses ladies’ bathrooms.

The cross-dresser said his appearance, clothing and voice often make people perceive him as a woman rather than a man.

Speaking during an interview with Kwambox on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Jony explained his choice when asked which bathrooms he uses.

“The ladies. Because I speak for myself, I pass as a lady more than a guy,” he said.

Jony attributed this perception to his feminine dressing, limited facial hair and relatively soft voice.

“I pass as a lady because of the dressing. I don’t have a lot of facial hair; my voice is not that deep,” he added.

Jony Explains His Experience in Clubs

Beyond discussing bathroom choices, Jony shared how he navigates social spaces while cross-dressing.

He said he has learnt to take precautions when visiting clubs to avoid misunderstandings about his identity.

According to the hairdresser, he informs security personnel about his identity before entering entertainment establishments.

He explained that making himself known to bouncers helps them understand that he is a man despite his feminine appearance.

Jony said the approach followed an experience at a club that taught him the importance of being cautious.

“There was a time I went to a certain club and one thing I have realised in this cross-dressing business, you cannot be different na bado ukue na kiburi,” he said.

His remarks highlighted the importance he places on communicating with security personnel before entering crowded social venues.

Why He Alerts Bouncers Before Entering

Jony explained that informing bouncers about his identity beforehand could help prevent confusion if a disagreement arose.

He also noted that people who dress differently might not always have friends nearby to support them during difficult situations.

“So what I do when I go to clubs, I let the bouncers know who I am first,” he said.

“Ndio just in case there is an issue, at least they knew Jony is a guy. You don’t have a lot of people to back you up,” he added.

The artist’s comments offer insight into how he manages public interactions while expressing himself through fashion and cross-dressing.

His explanation also underscores the practical precautions he considers necessary when visiting clubs and other social spaces.
