Fake Payment Demands Reported
Schools hosting junior secondary classes have reportedly been asked to provide Ksh1,000. Institutions without junior secondary sections have instead been instructed to provide Ksh500.
The money was allegedly supposed to be delivered to zonal chairpersons by Friday, September 11. The alleged payments were presented as facilitation for teacher recruitment and promotion interviews.
The claims have been dismissed by the commission as unauthorized and completely fraudulent. Teachers and school administrators have therefore been urged to disregard the payment instructions.
Teacher Services Remain Free
No charges are imposed by TSC for recruitment, promotion, or other official teacher services. The commission has reiterated that applicants should never be asked to pay individuals for interviews.
Resources are provided to County Directors of Education to facilitate recruitment and promotion exercises. The arrangement is intended to ensure that approved processes are conducted without financial demands on schools.
Heads of public basic education institutions have also been cautioned against unauthorized financial collections. Any demands made outside official TSC procedures should therefore be treated with considerable suspicion.
Recruitment Follows Official Procedures
Teacher recruitment and promotion interviews are conducted through established procedures approved by the commission. Applications for available opportunities are submitted through the official Teachers Online Services platform.
Candidates are shortlisted according to predetermined requirements, including service duration, qualifications, merit, and available vacancies. The process is designed to ensure that appointments and promotions are awarded through competitive and transparent procedures.
No payment is required to secure shortlisting, interview participation, recruitment, or promotion consideration. Teachers have therefore been advised to rely only on official communication issued through recognized TSC channels.

The warning comes after new teacher promotion guidelines were introduced for the 2026/27 financial year. The guidelines are expected to guide the consideration of eligible teachers seeking advancement.
