Ruto Vows to Crack Down on Political Gangs Amid Rising Violence

President William Ruto has vowed to take action against political goons as concerns grow over violence linked to political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a rally in Emurua Dikirr on Wednesday, August 26, Ruto said his administration's priority remains maintaining peace and stability across the country.

Ruto Calls for Peace

The President urged residents to reject hostility and political violence, saying peace remains essential for development.

He said Kenyans should work together without allowing political differences to create conflict.

Ruto also addressed growing concerns over political goons, promising that his administration would deal with individuals involved in violence.

Opposition Pushes for ICC Action

Ruto's remarks come as opposition leaders and civil society groups continue calling for the International Criminal Court to examine allegations of organised political violence in Kenya.

The calls follow several recent confrontations involving political leaders and their supporters in different parts of the country.

Opposition groups have cited incidents involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement.

They argue that the incidents raise concerns about the safety of political activities ahead of the 2027 election.

Government Rejects ICC Calls

The government has rejected calls for ICC intervention, maintaining that Kenyan institutions have the mandate to investigate and prosecute crimes committed within the country.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said Kenya should strengthen its police, prosecution and judicial institutions instead of relying on international intervention.

He also noted that President Ruto previously faced proceedings at the ICC, arguing that the experience demonstrated his willingness to respect the rule of law.

Political Violence Debate Intensifies

The debate over political violence has intensified as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Opposition leaders have accused the government of failing to adequately address attacks targeting political gatherings.

The administration, however, maintains that security agencies will deal with anyone who breaks the law regardless of their political affiliation.
