Mombasa Meeting Turns Violent as Three Suffer Gunshot Wounds

Injured Youth Rushed to the Hospital

A youth meeting attended by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir descended into chaos on Friday, August 21, after three people suffered gunshot wounds.

The confrontation happened at Bomu Stadium in Changamwe following a dispute between some youths and the governor’s security team.

Youths Chant Against Governor

Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono said tensions escalated after some youths chanted “one-term” slogans during the governor’s address.

According to the police commander, an unidentified group approached the governor as he spoke to members of the Stawisha Fund team.

The confrontation then turned violent, resulting in three people sustaining gunshot wounds.

Witness Accuses Bodyguard of Shooting

Witness Said Kimbo said several youths moved closer to the governor because they wanted to speak to him.

He claimed the governor’s bodyguards pushed the youths away before one guard drew a firearm.

Kimbo said the guard fired and hit his colleague in the leg as he tried to pull him away from the confrontation.

Police said officers would investigate the incident and identify anyone who broke the law.

Injured Rushed to Hospital

People at the scene first took the injured to Mikindani Clinic before transferring them to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The shooting has sparked fresh concerns over security conduct during political gatherings and public meetings.

The incident also comes shortly after unrest at a political rally in Homa Bay left at least four people dead and dozens injured.

Governor Nassir had not issued a public statement on the incident by the time of publication.
