Gachagua Says He Advised Kang'ata to Skip Ol Kalou Visit

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that he warned Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata against travelling to Ol Kalou before Sunday's political activities. He said he believed the visit could expose the governor to an already tense political environment.

Speaking during a public address, Gachagua said he passed the message through Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu. He claimed he deliberately avoided attending the by-election campaigns because of concerns over what might happen.

Gachagua said he informed Nyutu to relay his concerns directly to Kang'ata before the planned visit. He alleged that certain individuals intended to take advantage of the governor's presence during the campaigns.

The former deputy president claimed Kang'ata ignored the warning and proceeded with the trip as planned. He said that decision prompted him to later discuss the matter publicly.

Gachagua Dismisses Claims of Political Fallout

The former deputy president also denied reports suggesting his political camp had differences with the Linda Mwananchi movement. He maintained that his team has previously worked together with leaders linked to the movement.

Gachagua recalled addressing supporters during a political gathering in Thika, where he encouraged cooperation. He said his supporters were free to work alongside leaders associated with the movement.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service confirmed that political violence erupted in Kisumu and Nyahururu on Sunday. Police said one person died while several others sustained injuries during the separate incidents.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga condemned the violence and urged political supporters to exercise restraint. He warned that acts of political intolerance threaten public order and peaceful democratic participation.

Authorities Continue Investigations

According to police, rival groups clashed in Kisumu, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The incident also resulted in nine motorcycles being burned and damage to a police vehicle.

Police arrested eight suspects following the clashes and launched a search for additional individuals linked to the violence. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities continue gathering evidence from both incidents.

Police also reported that another group disrupted a political rally in Nyahururu by throwing stones at attendees. Several people suffered minor injuries, including Joseph Gitau, who later received treatment and was discharged.

The National Police Service has urged political leaders and supporters to maintain peace as political activities continue. Authorities say investigations into both incidents will continue until those responsible face legal action.
