The incident happened in Wandathe Village, Kathiani Sub-County, where residents initially dismissed the dog's unusual behavior before making a gruesome discovery that has left the entire community in mourning.
According to information gathered from the area, the dog returned home carrying what its owner believed was an animal limb. On closer inspection, however, the family realised it was a human leg, prompting immediate alarm among neighbours.
The unexpected discovery triggered a search around the nearby thicket where the dog had wandered. Villagers followed the animal's route before stumbling upon several bodies hidden in the bushes.
Police later confirmed that the victims included a 28-year-old woman, her two young children and her unborn baby. Reports indicate the woman was approximately seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
The discovery immediately attracted dozens of residents as police officers secured the area and began documenting the crime scene.
Kathiani Sub-County Police Commander George Kashmir confirmed that officers responded after receiving reports from members of the public who had recovered what appeared to be part of a child's body.
According to the police commander, the first report reached Kathiani Police Station after villagers noticed dogs feeding on human remains.
Officers rushed to the area before launching a wider search that uncovered additional bodies scattered within the same location.
Detectives have since opened a murder investigation and identified a 23-year-old man as a person of interest.
Residents told investigators that the man had married the deceased woman and had recently started living with her and her two children, although the children reportedly belonged to a previous relationship.
Police have not announced any charges against the individual as investigations continue.
The motive behind the killings also remains unknown.
Residents who visited the scene described disturbing injuries on the victims.
Some claimed parts of the bodies appeared badly damaged, while others alleged signs of severe mutilation.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the exact nature of those injuries and continue relying on forensic examinations to establish what happened before the victims died.
The dog's owner, Benjamin Kikuvi, recalled the moment that raised suspicion.
He explained that his dog often returned home carrying small animals or objects collected during hunting trips in nearby bushes.
On that day, however, he immediately realised something was different after closely examining what the animal had brought back.
That discovery prompted him and several neighbours to search the surrounding area, ultimately leading them to the hidden crime scene.
Village elders described the killings as unprecedented and urged investigators to ensure everyone connected to the incident faces justice.
The brutal deaths have left many families living in fear, with residents calling for increased security patrols and faster investigations to restore confidence within the community.
Meanwhile, the family of the person under investigation has spoken publicly about the case.
His sister, Annastazia Wambua, said she encouraged her brother to report to Kathiani Police Station after police arrested their mother while pursuing leads.
She maintained that she advised him to cooperate fully with detectives if he had no involvement in the killings.
His father, Ezekiel Wambua, also recounted learning that his wife had been taken into custody before investigators questioned other family members.
Police continue collecting witness statements and forensic evidence as they work to establish exactly what happened before the woman and her children lost their lives.
The tragic incident has shocked residents across Kathiani, with many struggling to understand how an entire family could disappear unnoticed until a household dog accidentally exposed the crime.
Investigators say inquiries remain ongoing, and they have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station.
