Opposition Leaders Plan Pact to Back One Candidate in 2027 Race
Leaders allied to the United Opposition have started preparations for a formal agreement that will require them to support a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
The move aims to prevent divisions that could weaken the opposition's chances against President William Ruto.
Speaking during a television interview on Sunday, June 21, Democratic Action Party of Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa said coalition parties had already appointed experts to draft the agreement.
He said the technical team would prepare documents that all coalition principals would sign before the selection of a presidential flagbearer.
Leaders to Commit to Support One Candidate
According to Wamalwa, every leader in the coalition will pledge to support whoever emerges as the preferred candidate.
He said the arrangement seeks to eliminate internal disputes and reassure supporters that the opposition remains united despite having several presidential hopefuls.
Wamalwa explained that the commitment would apply to every coalition member regardless of personal ambitions.
He noted that leaders seeking the presidential ticket understand that only one candidate can carry the coalition flag into the election.
The former Cabinet Secretary said any leader who misses the ticket will have a duty to campaign for the chosen candidate.
He added that the eventual flagbearer should also expect support from all coalition partners during the campaign period.
Opposition Draws Lessons From 2002
Wamalwa compared the current political discussions to the unity that shaped the National Rainbow Coalition before the 2002 election.
He argued that opposition leaders succeeded in ending KANU's long stay in power because they rallied behind a common agenda.
According to him, the same formula could help the opposition challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027.
He said the coalition wants to replicate the spirit of cooperation that united different political parties more than two decades ago.
The opposition leader expressed confidence that a united front would increase its chances of winning the next presidential contest.
Several Leaders Eye Top Seat
Despite the unity message, several senior opposition figures continue to show interest in the coalition ticket.
Among the leaders linked to the race are Kalonzo Musyoka, Justin Muturi, Fred Matiang'i and Rigathi Gachagua.
Political observers have raised concerns that competition among the aspirants could create tensions within the coalition.
The presence of several influential leaders has fueled speculation about possible disagreements during the selection process.
However, coalition members continue to insist that unity remains their priority.
They maintain that the alliance will settle on one candidate through consultations and consensus.
Gachagua Takes Political Break
The latest developments come as former Deputy President Gachagua continues consultations ahead of the 2027 race.
Recently, he announced a 45-day break from active political engagements.
He said the period would allow him to consult supporters, allies and stakeholders on the coalition's direction.
His announcement triggered fresh debate about possible power-sharing arrangements within the opposition camp.
Some analysts view the consultations as part of broader efforts to build consensus before the coalition unveils its strategy.
Focus Shifts to Candidate Selection
The opposition now faces the difficult task of choosing one candidate from a field of experienced political figures.
While leaders continue to project unity, the flagbearer question remains one of the biggest tests facing the coalition.
The planned agreement seeks to reduce the risk of defections and internal disputes after the selection process.
If successful, the pact could help the opposition present a united challenge against Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
For now, coalition leaders say their focus remains on strengthening cooperation and building support ahead of the highly anticipated contest.
