Paraguay forward Miguel Almiron became the first player to receive a red card under a new World Cup rule during the match against Turkiye.

The South American side still secured a 1-0 victory despite playing the second half with 10 players. The win kept Paraguay’s World Cup hopes alive while Turkiye suffered elimination.

Matias Galarza gave Paraguay an early advantage after scoring within the opening two minutes of the match. His strike handed La Albirroja the perfect start.

Turkiye responded by controlling much of the first half. However, Paraguay’s defence remained firm and prevented the European side from finding an equaliser.

Almiron Sent Off After VAR Review

Paraguay’s challenge became difficult when Almiron received a red card in stoppage time before halftime.

The former Newcastle United player made a comment toward a Turkiye player while covering his mouth with his hand.

The referee stopped play after a confrontation between players from both teams. Turkiye players had complained after Paraguay delayed an attack while a player received treatment.

During the argument, Almiron was seen covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent. The referee then reviewed the incident through VAR.

After checking the footage, Ivan Barton issued Almiron a straight red card.

The decision followed a new IFAB rule that allows referees to punish players who cover their mouths while making comments toward opponents.

New IFAB Rule Creates Debate

The rule was introduced after previous incidents where players accused opponents of making offensive comments during matches.

Under the regulation, players who hide their mouths while speaking to opponents can face disciplinary action.

Almiron’s dismissal marked the first major test of the rule at the World Cup.

The decision attracted reactions from fans, with many supporting the referee’s action. Some supporters argued that players had already received warnings about the regulation before the tournament.

Others criticised Almiron for putting Paraguay at risk during an important match.

Paraguay Survive Pressure

Despite losing Almiron, Paraguay defended their lead throughout the second half.

Turkiye dominated possession and placed heavy pressure on the South American defence. However, they failed to break through.

The result ended Turkiye’s World Cup campaign. They became the second team eliminated from the tournament after Haiti suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brazil earlier.

Almiron’s red card will remain one of the biggest talking points from the match. The incident also raised questions over whether more players will fall victim to the new rule during the tournament.
