Two Traffic Police Officers Arrested Over KSh23,000 Bribery Allegations

Two traffic police officers have been arrested in Meru County over allegations of collecting bribes from motorists along the Maua-Makutano Road. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed the arrests on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The officers were arrested near Kemu following a targeted surveillance operation by anti-graft detectives. Investigators suspect they were demanding and receiving money from motorists using the road.

EACC said its officers recovered KSh23,000 in different denominations during the operation. Detectives also impounded a Toyota Fielder parked beside the road, which they suspected belonged to one of the officers.

The suspects were escorted to the commission’s Upper Eastern Regional Office in Isiolo for processing and statement recording. Investigations into the alleged bribery were continuing following their arrest.

EACC Investigates Alleged Roadside Extortion

The commission said the arrests followed surveillance targeting suspected bribery by traffic officers. The operation sought to address allegations that motorists were being asked to pay money while travelling along the route.

“During the operation, EACC officers recovered Ksh23,000 in various denominations from the two officers,” the agency stated. It did not disclose the identities of the suspects or provide further details about the vehicle impounded during the operation.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and investigations remain ongoing. Any determination of criminal responsibility will depend on the evidence and the legal process.

Traffic officers conduct roadside checks to enforce transport laws and regulations. However, allegations of bribery during such operations have prompted complaints from motorists and calls for accountability.

NTSA Employee Faces Separate Bribery Case

The latest arrests followed another announcement by EACC involving a National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) clerk. The employee was accused of demanding KSh18,000 to facilitate the processing of a driving licence.

Investigators alleged that the suspect was arrested after receiving KSh8,000 from the requested amount. The suspect was later released on KSh50,000 cash bail as the case proceeded through the legal system.

The NTSA case is separate from the arrests in Meru, involving a different suspect and alleged offence. Both incidents have nevertheless drawn attention to the commission’s investigations into suspected corruption involving public officers.

EACC has continued conducting operations targeting alleged bribery and abuse of public office. The agency investigates complaints and gathers evidence before cases proceed through the appropriate legal channels.

Three Officers Previously Arrested in Webuye

In July 2026, EACC arrested three traffic police officers over alleged bribery at a roadblock along the Webuye-Kitale Road. The operation followed complaints from motorists travelling through the area.

The complaints reportedly came from public service vehicle operators and drivers of heavy commercial trucks. They alleged that officers routinely demanded money from motorists passing through the roadblock.

According to the commission, the complaints prompted targeted surveillance before the arrests. The operation formed part of broader efforts to investigate suspected extortion along major transport routes.

The latest case in Meru adds to the series of reported operations involving traffic officers accused of soliciting bribes. However, each case must be assessed independently according to its evidence and legal proceedings.

EACC has yet to announce the outcome of the investigations involving the two Meru officers. The commission’s findings will determine the next steps as the matter progresses through the legal process.
