Safaricom Explains Why M-Shwari Money Paid Off Deleted Line's Loan

An X user, @Kristen8cg, complained on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, that money vanished from her M-Shwari account. She asked who authorised the deduction and why she received no message.

She demanded an explanation of what a pooled line loan repayment means. Her post questioned how anyone could take her money without her consent.

Safaricom's Response

Safaricom told the customer that a pooled line is a number once registered under her details. The company deletes such numbers when they stay inactive for a long time.

It said the deduction cleared an overdue loan balance linked to her account. The company did not say why she received no notification.

How Recovery Works

Customers can use several phone lines registered under their identification details to access financial services. Deleting a line therefore does not cancel a loan the borrower took.

In this case, the deleted line carried an overdue balance tied to the customer's account. That balance triggered the recovery from her M-Shwari savings.

Loans Follow the Borrower

A February 2026 report showed that M-Shwari links loans to a borrower's identification details. The phone number alone does not decide who owes the money.

A borrower cannot escape a debt by deleting a SIM card or changing numbers. A new owner of a recycled number should not carry a stranger's debt.

M-Shwari Repayment Terms

M-Shwari is a savings and credit service run by Safaricom and NCBA Bank. Customers can repay loans through M-PESA or directly from their M-Shwari accounts.

The published product information gives borrowers a one-month repayment period. The terms also cover overdue loans, including rollovers of unpaid balances and related fees.
