Ruto Reserves 20% of Affordable Homes for Teachers

Teachers will be given priority in the government's affordable housing programme, with 20 per cent of available units set aside for them. President William Ruto announced the arrangement during World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Under the arrangement, one out of every five affordable homes developed under the programme will be reserved for teachers. Ruto said the initiative was based on an agreement signed in September 2025 between the Affordable Housing Board, KNUT and KUPPET.

Teachers to Pay Through Salaries

A salary check-off arrangement is also being developed to make it easier for teachers to finance the purchase of the homes. The Affordable Housing Board is working with the Teachers Service Commission to establish a system through which monthly payments can be deducted directly from teachers’ salaries.

Teachers’ SACCOs are also expected to participate by developing financing options suited to different income levels. A dedicated team has reportedly been established to assist teachers interested in acquiring the housing units.

Applications Through Boma Yangu

Teachers seeking affordable homes will be able to apply for their preferred units through the Boma Yangu platform. The arrangement is expected to provide teachers with a structured route to homeownership while spreading payments over time.

Ruto also announced reforms targeting teachers approaching retirement. The Pension Management Information System is being used to digitise records, with the government targeting payment of retirement benefits within 10 days of retirement once the system is fully operational.

The President said the reforms were intended to reduce delays that have previously forced retirees to make repeated follow-ups across government offices.
