Mackenzie, 29 Co-Accused Found Guilty of Killing 191 in Shakahola Massacre

Pastor Paul Mackenzie and 29 co-accused have been convicted on murder charges connected to the Shakahola deaths. Justice Diana Kavedza delivered the verdict on Monday, October 19, finding all 30 accused guilty on 191 counts.

The charges relate to the deaths of 190 children and one adult, according to the court. The wider Shakahola tragedy has claimed more than 400 lives, with investigations uncovering mass graves in Kilifi County.

Court Details Evidence Against the Accused

Justice Kavedza said the prosecution had proved its case against the accused persons. The court heard evidence that some victims died through strangulation and asphyxiation, which deprives the body of oxygen.

The court also considered allegations that Mackenzie and his co-accused discouraged followers from seeking medical treatment. They were accused of opposing vaccination and antenatal care while portraying hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical companies as evil.

The judgment drew on legal principles concerning mass killings and relevant international standards. The accused were convicted under provisions cited by the court in its ruling.

Sentencing Dates Announced

The court will receive probation reports for the convicted persons on October 30, 2026. The reports will be considered before mitigation proceedings begin.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled to start on Monday, November 2. The court is expected to deliver its sentence on Friday, November 6, 2026.

The verdict marks a major development in the prosecution arising from the Shakahola tragedy. The upcoming sentencing proceedings will determine the penalties imposed on the convicted individuals.
