KNEC Sets Strict Rules for 2026 KCSE Candidates
Candidates must report for a security search outside the examination room. They must take their desks at least 15 minutes before each paper starts.
The morning session begins at 8 am, and the afternoon session starts at 2 pm. KNEC expects every candidate to arrive on time for both.
Late Arrivals
A late candidate must give the supervisor a satisfactory reason for missing the start. Those who arrive over 30 minutes late will receive a paper only in exceptional circumstances.
Starting the Paper
Candidates must check that they received the correct question paper for their registered subject. They must also tell the supervisor if any material needed to answer a question is missing.
Candidates must write their names and index numbers correctly on question papers and answer scripts. They must also sign each booklet and write the examination date on it.
Students may write on both sides of the booklet but must leave the margins empty. They must not copy questions into the booklet and must leave one blank line after each answer.
KNEC requires blue or black ink for all written answers. Candidates may use pencils only when they draw diagrams.
Banned Items
KNEC forbids mobile phones and other electronic communication devices at all examination centres. The council also bans wristwatches and programmable calculators inside the examination rooms.
Candidates may not keep books, notes, papers, or other unauthorised materials on them or near their desks. Handbags, briefcases, and backpacks are also strictly forbidden at the centres.
Calculator Rules
Where a subject allows calculators, candidates must use the specified non-programmable type without a cover. These subjects include Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Agriculture, and Business Studies.
The list also covers Woodwork, Metalwork, Building Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, and Drawing and Design. Aviation Technology and Computer Studies complete the permitted subjects.
Finishing the Exam
Candidates must stop writing the moment the supervisor or invigilator gives the instruction. They must then confirm that their names, index numbers, signatures, and dates are correct before handing in the booklet.
No candidate may leave early without special permission from the supervisor. Those who receive permission cannot take any question paper or answer booklet out of the room.
