Kenya Suspends Hotel Meetings for Health Officials Following Ebola Case
The measure was introduced to allow health officials to concentrate on emergency preparedness, contact tracing and response activities. In a memo dated October 7, Muthoni instructed heads of directorates, divisions and programmes to suspend the planned gatherings.
Ministry Clarifies Who Is Affected
The suspension initially raised questions about whether all government meetings held in hotels had been prohibited. However, the Ministry of Health later clarified that the directive applies specifically to staff in the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, rather than the entire government.
The restriction is intended to ensure technical officers remain available to support the ongoing public health response. Departments seeking exceptions to the directive are required to obtain approval from the PS's office, according to reports on the memo.
Kenya Steps Up Ebola Preparedness
Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease on October 6, 2026, involving a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient travelled through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi on October 3 and was subsequently isolated and tested at a local hospital.
The patient later died, prompting health authorities to intensify contact tracing and other response measures. The Ministry of Health reported that contacts included family members and healthcare workers, while efforts were also underway to trace passengers and crew members who travelled on the same flight.
Contact Tracing and Surveillance Continue
Contact tracing is a key public health measure used to identify people who may have been exposed to an infected person and monitor them for possible symptoms. Health authorities are also strengthening surveillance and coordinating response activities to reduce the risk of further transmission.
Bundibugyo virus disease is a form of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who has symptoms, or contaminated materials. The World Health Organization has confirmed that response measures are being supported in Kenya following the imported case.
The hotel-meeting suspension will remain in place until further notice, with no resumption date announced in the reports cited. The restriction is an administrative measure aimed at keeping public health personnel available as Kenya continues its preparedness and response operations.
