Kenya Quarantines 10 as Ebola Contact List Reaches 57

Ten people have been placed in quarantine in Kenya as health authorities track 57 contacts linked to the country’s first confirmed Ebola patient.

The number of contacts is expected to increase as tracing teams continue searching for people who may have been exposed to the deceased patient.

The Ministry of Health has expanded surveillance and activated health workers across the country to respond to suspected cases as quickly as possible.

Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said the government was working with county administrations and faith-based health facilities to strengthen preparedness.

More People Being Traced

Muthoni said the 57 contacts identified so far represented the early stage of an ongoing tracing exercise.

Health officials are continuing to establish where the patient travelled, whom he interacted with and which people may require monitoring or quarantine.

The Ministry of Health has also heightened surveillance at 15 points of entry as part of measures to prevent further transmission.

Treatment centres are being activated in counties bordering neighbouring countries so that suspected cases can be assessed and managed closer to where they are detected.

Government Says No Outbreak

Muthoni stressed that Kenya was dealing with an imported Ebola case and not an outbreak.

She urged Kenyans to remain alert but rely on official information from health authorities rather than unverified reports.

Director-General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth said the country had adequate quarantine capacity and that temporary facilities could be established if more space became necessary.

The first confirmed patient had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi on October 3.

The Ministry has also been tracing passengers and crew members who travelled on the same flight as the patient, alongside family members and healthcare workers who attended to him.

Health authorities are now focused on completing contact tracing, monitoring those considered at risk and quickly identifying any suspected new cases.
