KNEC Opens Final KCSE Registration Window Before 2027 System Shutdown Completely

The Kenya National Examinations Council has confirmed 2027 as the final KCSE examination sitting. Registration windows open annually around February and March for all interested candidates.

President Daniel arap Moi introduced the 8-4-4 system in 1985 completely. The system reduced basic education to twelve years while increasing undergraduate studies minimum.

First KCSE Examination Administered in 1989 After System Implementation in Educational Institutions

The inaugural KCSE sitting took place in 1989 establishing the examination. KCSE has anchored Kenya's education system continuously since that first examination sitting.

Students currently progressing through secondary school will sit their examinations in 2027. These learners were also the last to sit Kenya Certificate Primary Education.

The government is phasing out KCSE curriculum completely in educational institutions nationwide. Only two university classes remained on the KCSE track by end 2025.

Two Final Years Remain for Kenyans Wanting to Sit KCSE Before Transition

Kenyans have only this year and 2027 remaining to sit KCSE. After 2027, the country transitions fully to competency-based education in secondary schools.

Dr David Njengere has urged all candidates wishing to register immediately. The registration deadline approaches and candidates must act before the window closes.

KCSE is being replaced by a new examination called KCBE. The Kenya Certificate of Basic Education operates under the Competency-Based Education system.

First KCBE Sitting Expected in 2028 for Learners Completing Senior School Programme

The first KCBE sitting will be administered to learners in 2028. These learners will have just concluded the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment.

Cumulative data from projects, practicals and school assessments will form reporting. Learners will be judged over time rather than by single examination sitting.

Students can now select pathways aligned to their specific strengths and interests. Available options span arts, sports, sciences and technical skills completely.

Digital testing and competency-based assessment replace the previous high-stakes examination model. This represents Kenya's biggest education system change since independence occurred completely.
