Owalo Launches Political Party Ahead of 2027 Presidential Contest

Former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo Shakes Hands With President William Ruto

Former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has officially moved closer to his 2027 presidential ambitions after launching a new political party. The former ICT and Digital Economy CS introduced the People Prosperity Party (PPP) during an event in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 8.

Owalo said the new party will focus on economic growth, national development and improving the livelihoods of Kenyans. He presented the outfit as a vehicle for what he described as a new chapter in Kenya’s political journey.

Former CS Promises Economic Change

While announcing his presidential bid, Owalo said his leadership would focus on what he termed Kenya’s “third liberation.” He described the agenda as an economic liberation aimed at creating greater prosperity for citizens.

Owalo said he wants to move away from what he called career politics and introduce a different style of leadership. He described himself as a candidate seeking to transform the country’s economic direction.

The former CS stated that his approach would not follow the usual political patterns. He said his administration would focus on results and improved service delivery if elected.

Owalo’s Political Journey

Owalo served as Cabinet Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy under President William Ruto’s administration. He left the Cabinet in 2024 during a government reshuffle following widespread protests.

After his Cabinet exit, he received another appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff at State House. He later resigned from the position in January 2026 after declaring his intention to contest for the presidency.

Owalo said he could no longer continue serving in government after making his political ambitions public. He then began preparing for a direct contest for the country’s top seat.

Tax Cuts Among His Key Promises

As he begins building support ahead of the 2027 election, Owalo has outlined several proposals targeting the economy. He has promised to reduce taxes and ease financial pressure on Kenyans.

Among his proposals is lowering the income tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent. He has also pledged to reduce VAT from 16 percent to 10 percent.

Owalo further wants the housing levy reduced from 1.5 percent to 0.5 percent. He says the measures would provide relief to households and businesses.

PPP Joins 2027 Political Race

The launch of the People Prosperity Party places Owalo among politicians positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. He now faces the task of building a nationwide political network.

The former CS said he plans to tour different parts of the country to sell his agenda. He hopes voters will support his push for a new political and economic direction.
