DCI Arrests Two as Probe Into Killing of Psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso Intensifies

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two persons of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, marking a major development in the investigation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 30, the DCI said the two suspects are in custody and are being interrogated by homicide detectives as investigations continue.

Detectives Recover Exhibits

The agency confirmed that detectives searched premises linked to the two individuals and recovered several exhibits for forensic examination.

According to the DCI, specialized homicide investigators and forensic experts have been pursuing multiple leads since taking over the case. The operation has involved witness interviews, forensic analysis and targeted investigative actions.

However, the DCI did not reveal the identities of the suspects. Investigators said they were withholding that information to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Psychologist Killed in Upper Hill

Dr Mutiso was shot dead on Wednesday in Nairobi's Upper Hill area in what investigators believe may have been a targeted attack.

Preliminary findings indicate that she had requested an online taxi service before the shooting occurred near Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Witnesses told investigators that armed men riding on a motorcycle opened fire on the taxi after another vehicle allegedly intercepted it.

The psychologist sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she later died while receiving treatment.

Earlier Warning to Police

Following the shooting, police officers and Crime Scene Investigation detectives secured the area, collected forensic evidence and interviewed witnesses.

The DCI also revealed that Dr Mutiso had previously reported fears for her safety and had recorded a statement with police indicating that her life was in danger.

Investigators were reportedly still examining that earlier complaint when she was killed.

Respected Mental Health Expert

Dr Mutiso was widely known in Kenya's mental health sector. She served as Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF).

Her work focused on child and adolescent mental health, and she played a key role in research and policy discussions on psychological well-being in Kenya and across Africa.

The DCI said investigations remain active as detectives continue analyzing the recovered exhibits, pursuing additional leads and working to establish the motive and full circumstances surrounding Dr Mutiso's death.
